Tonic Jazz
Mfundo Shangase formally known by his stage name “Tonic Jazz” was born in 1991,and was raised in Inanda which is a popular township located in Durban Kwa-ZuluNatal. His passion and curiosity for music developed at an early age 0f 12 which through writing hip hop and R&B songs the music mogul discovered his unique talent. In year 2008 Tonic Jazz started producing his own beats which is where he fell in love with “gqom” music which is a Durban made electronic trans dance genre.Within the industry Tonic Jazz has produced for the likes of Zanda Zakuza, Dj Sithelo, Mpumi, Andile Mpisane, Gold Max from Distraction Boyz, Bhar and Tzozo just to name a few. To just prove that Tonic Jazz is a man of many talents he has also produced a gospel song for the legendary Sgwili. Over the years of his career Tonic Jazz has worked closely with the well acclaimed Alcapoem. Through mentoring and producing music together Tonic Jazz started being perceived as the junior Alcapoem within the industry, as some people thought TonIc Jazz and Alcapoem are related. His contribution to the “gqom nation” opened a lot of ventures aboard for him that saw him in 2012 releasing and producing work for an international record company in Russia (Ukraine). This collaboration not only became an international hit but also landed number 1 in Spain on the Ibiza Compilation CD. In 2015 Tonic Jazz was amongst the top ten people in a competition in Cuba for best remixed song. Amongst his international projects, Tonic Jazz also worked with a London based production company that documented him and his work for their series called the Boiler room (Dj Sets). This led to him having a three years working relationship with Ryan Huffman who is a well-known United Kingdom (UK) producer and radio personality. Tonic worked and produced music Ryan under a group Illumination Boys which was well known in the UK. Illumination Boys released two EP’s which were a hit on the playlists of UK radio stations. Red bull also documented Tonic for a show called Revealing History Behind The Future Sound (Gqom) which was popular on our South African TV screens. Currently Tonic Jazz is signed under a recording label called Ithonga Production and is due to release an album before the end of 2021.
Drama Drizzy
Rodney Mwelisi Mtshali formally known as “Drama Drizzy” is a singer and song writer that specialises in RnB, Trapsoul, Deep House, Afro Pop, and Hip hop. Born in 1990 in the township of Mayville located in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Drama Drizzy developed the love for music at the tender age of 9 when he was only in grade 3. Inspired by Michael Jackson, Chris brown and Bryson Tillar his love for music evoked from there. After completing matric Drama Drizzy started peruseing his music career. In 2014 he joined a church choir so he could improve his musical skills and talent. Through the church choir his music skills developed, and he went on to work on solo projects in hopes of being discovered. Drama Drizzy choose to do Pop Music because it fused all different genres. Within the years of his music career Drama Drizzy has recorded over 15 songs that have been released and countless amount of work that is yet to be released. He has been on smash hits such as “I Made It” and ‘One Hour’ featuring Gpaul. Through his collaborations, Drama Drizzy joined a musical group called “The Nu-Level”. Together they released a single titled “No Fear” which also shot a music video that highlighted the movement of the group. In 2019, Drama Drizzy went back to focusing on his solo projects which lead to his feature on the hit single “Thula” by Sithelo The Dj featuring Mpumi and Tonic Jazz which was released 2020. The song was a hit on South African radio stations and music television channels. Over the years of his career Drama Drizzy has shared the stage with big artists such as Sjava, Kwesta, Black Diamond, Something Soweto, and Nadia Nakia just to name a few. Recently, Drama Drizzy was featured on a single titled “Sophumelela” by Tonic Jazz featuring Mampintsha. The single is a huge hit and currently topping the charts on radio and television. “Sophumelela” was released under Ithonga Production which is the recording label that Drama Drizzy is currently signed under. Drama Drizzy is due to release a single end of July under Ithonga Production and hopefully release an album in 2022.
Mzansi Arts Development Ensemble
The “We Shall Over Come” is a single, by Mzansi Arts Development
Ensemble, an upliftment song that speaks of hope in overcoming this Covid-19 pandemic the world is facing. The song is inspired by the hardships individuals have been enduring due to covid-19, and an art development programme called “Emjondolo art in action development programme”, which was facilitated end of 2020 by Mzansi Arts Development Ensemble (MADE). The development programme focused on assisting artists coming from informal settlements around Kwa-Zulu Natal by giving them a platform to express their covid-19 experience through music. The whole song features emerging professional artists, the song was written and produced by MADE’s creative director Mr Lucky Cele. This Initiative is aimed at assisting the creative industry as we are highly affected by the covid-19 restrictions when it comes to performance and events during this period. which was released September 2020, is currently available on YouTube and is currently being played on Channel 0, Metro Fm and Ukhozi Fm just to name a few.
